Vehicle-related questions
Q: My rig is completely stock. Will I still be able to enjoy the trails?
A: Yes. Hollister Hills SVRA has a network of trails suited for all skill levels.
Q: My rig is 2-wheel drive. Can I still run the trails?
A: Yes, but your choice of trails will be limited to mostly green trails and a few blue.
Q: I am a beginner driver. Will there be any clinics or lessons provided?
A: There will be designated staff members who can help you get familiar with your truck and how to operate it off-pavement and, whenever possible, they will provide you with tips and guidance on the trail. However, you are ultimately responsible for your own safety and should not attempt any trails or obstacles that you are not comfortable with.
Q: Who are the designated staff members who can assist me?
A: Please contact potatomutato for more information
Q: Can my rig make it up Truck Hill?
A: Yes. However, please keep in mind that Truck Hill is very steep and oftentimes rutted out or covered with fine dirt that can lead to little or no traction.
Q: I don't own an FJ Cruiser. Can I join the event anyway?
A: Of course. The AllCal Republic is not an FJ-centric group. We welcome all makes and models.
Q: Do I need a CB radio?
A: No, but it does come in handy to communicate with trail leaders and others in your group. FRS/GPRS two-way radios and HAM radio are other communication options.
Park-related questions
Q: Are there enough trails to keep us entertained the entire weekend?
A: Yes. You can make your experience at Hollister Hills as easy or difficult as you want. There are many unlisted trails to explore as well.
Q: Can we drive through roped-off or gated trails?
A: Absolutely not. Please respect the trail restoration that is taking place and always remember to Tread Lightly!
Q: Can I bring my dirt bike or ATV?
A: Yes. Lower Ranch has an extensive network of trails suited for dirt bikes and ATVs. Dirt bikes and ATVs are not allowed in Upper Ranch (where the event will be held).
Q: Can I at least bring my dirt bike or ATV into Area 5 (base camp)?
A: Yes, but they can only be trailered in and must remain on the trailer at all times.
Q: Is there any night wheeling at Hollister Hills?
A: No. Night wheeling is not allowed.
Q: I am planning on arriving on Thursday. Will Area 5 (base camp) be open?
A: No. However, there are campsites in the park for $10.00/night. Please check into the Ranger Station to pay camping fees and obtain the combination code for the gate lock. Area 5 will be open for the event at 9:00 AM on Friday morning.
Q: What are some of the potential dangers I should be aware of?
A: Hollister Hills features many elevation gains, which creates many risks associated with rollovers and uncontrolled slides. Hollister is also home to poison oak: Leaves of three (and of red), let 'em be!
Q: I like wheeling, but three full days is quite a bit. Is there anything else to see or do in the area?
A: Yes. The San Benito County Wine Trail, which consists of a network of wineries open to the public, is just down the road. The city of Hollister is also nearby (20 minutes) as is the city of Gilroy, Garlic Capital of the World (40 minutes). And for those who like to shop, the Gilroy Outlet Mall is within a 40 minute drive.
Q: Are there gas stations and grocery stores nearby?
A: Yes, all are located in the city of Hollister, a 20 minute drive from Hollister Hills SVRA.
Q: Will there be cell coverage at the park?
A: Cell coverage will be spotty depending on where you are in the park. Data gets through better than calls, so if you need to communicate with someone or want to let someone know how to reach you, we suggest TXT-ting, etc.
